Lopburi Monkey Temple, Thailand | Hail to Your New Simian Kings!

When you are travelling the world, you come across stuff that you just wouldn’t expect to at home.

Beaches full of penguins, unexploded bombs, islands saved by birds and even sexy fruit.

But in Thailand, they like to drown you in the surreal and unpredictable.

– – > Kitchens in the street, um yeah, no worries

– – – – > Petrol sold from a hand-cranked plastic tub. We got you covered.

– – – – – – > Six people on a moped. Just another day in the life of a Bangkokian resident.

But just when you think you’ve seen it all, you get told about a city taken over by monkeys.

Now this I gotta see!

And this fabled city ruled over by a real-life King Louie?

Ladies and Gentleman, let me present to you…..

….Lopburi.

P.S. If you don’t know who King Louie it, watch the video, I guarantee it will make your day.

P.P.S. If you want to visit Lopburi, it’s a couple of hours north of Bangkok on the train. There are a few ancient temples to see, and an interesting museum, but let’s be clear, the big attraction is those monkeys!

P.P.P.S. If you are looking for some tangible, useful information, not just a load of monkey pics, then check out this link 🙂

Lopburi, Monkey Town
They see me rollin’, they hating.
You wot mate.
Monkey Crossing, Lopburi
It would be easy to think this photo is about the monkeys crossing the road. It isn’t, it’s about the lady with the massive monkey-bashing stick. #staysafeoutthere
Feeding the monkeys, Lopburi
TOURISTS PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE MONKEYS. But if you’re a local, ah, go ahead, it’ll be fine.
Monkeys on Sign, Lopburi
Entrance fee, two mangoes or a handful of lychees.
Monkeys on Buddha at Lopburi
“Frank, I don’t think you’re doing it right. I don’t remember anything in Buddhism school about hugging the big guy”.
Monkeys at Lopburi Temple
Hear no evil, speak no evil, balls hanging out – not really evil but kinda awkward.
Baby monkey with dad at Lopburi
I’m telling you for the last time. STOP MUCKING AROUND, or I’ll have you over my knee. I don’t care about ‘modern parenting’, my dad smacked me – it never did me any harm.
Phra Prang Sam Yod
Phra Prang Sam Yod. Built by men, owned by monkeys.
Monkeys at Phra Prang Sam Yod
I’m not sure what this monkey would be saying, but I can guarantee you he’d be saying it in a pirate accent.
